I keep hearing about the thyroid gland context with overweight and in extreme cases, obesity. I’d love to know what the connection between them is?
Hypothyroidism (thyroid) secretes the hormones thyroxine and T3. These hormones are responsible for the body’s basic metabolic rate, and in other words – the energy needed for routine maintenance of the body at rest, the operation of the respiratory muscles, liver and kidney operation, blood flow, and more. As your body is a bigger “spender”, meaning has faster metabolism – it requires more energy to maintain the above specified actions. Since weight gain and obesity is a caloric imbalance which means you enter more energy than use, increased metabolism results in using more energy that can contribute to weight loss or alternatively in cases of decreased metabolism – obesity.
