You may not realize that the little butterfly shaped organ that rests just below your larynx can cause you to not be able to reproduce. It can also cause complications with other body organs like the pancreas and leave you susceptible to diabetes. This organ may be tiny, but it is powerful, and the hormones it produces are critical in our system.
The thyroid absorbs the iodine from the foods we eat, and then it uses the iodine it has collected in its production of the T3 and T4 hormones. Our thyroid is the only part of the human body that is able to absorb or use iodine.
The thyroid hormones of T3 and T4 help control our metabolism rate, and our heart rates, and our ability to tolerate changing temperatures. They also help to regulate the female and the male reproductive systems so that fertility is achieved.
How does Hypothyroidism affect fertility in men?
Fertility issues created by an underactive thyroid gland are different in men than they are in women. They are still frustrating and must be corrected before pregnancy can be achieved.
Hypothyroidism can cause a sever decrease in sexual desire for men. This reaction is caused because the low amounts of thyroid hormone cause impairment of the testosterone synthesis in the male testicles. Hormone levels must be corrected so that testosterone production returns to normal.
Men may also experience swelling and engorgement of their mammary glands. This will not stop them from being fertile, but it is a direct result of decreases testosterone levels that have become severe.
How does hypothyroidism affect fertility in women?
Hypothyroidism can cause a woman to have problems with her menstrual cycle. Some women will have heavier periods that last for longer periods of time while other women will actually have fewer days on their cycles. The change in the duration of the menses cycle is because the hormones that are needed to trigger the beginning and end of menses are out of balance due to the lower levels of iron, selenium, and iodine in the body.
A woman will often develop hyperprolactenimia when they have an underactive thyroid gland. This condition refers to an elevated level of the prolactin hormone in the body. Women can also have the presence of milk when there has been no pregnancy or childbirth to initiate the milk production. This condition is known as galactorrha.
If the thyroid hormone imbalance continues the woman will suffer from changes in her menses and from low basal body temperatures. Until the condition is corrected the woman will have very little chance of getting pregnant or carrying the baby to term.
How does hypothyroidism affect fertility drugs?
The drugs that women take to increase their fertility are rendered incapable of performing their objectives when the thyroid hormone levels are at an insufficient level. The drugs work in conjunction with the natural hormones in the body and they cannot do this if the natural hormones are not present.
