What Does TSH Test For, and what are the normal TSH levels?

In the TSH test you are testing the level of the hormone that stimulates the thyroid gland (TSH – Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) in the blood stream.

The Thyroid gland, is located in the front of the neck, it produces hormones (T4 and T3) that regulate the body’s metabolism among other things. The thyroid tissue is built of Follicular cells filed with colloid material, comprised mostly of a protein that contains iodine called Thyroglobulin.

TSH Levels and T4

There is a fairly accurate constant feedback that regulates the release of precise amount of thyroid hormones, just sufficient for the body’s metabolic needs. TSH is a hormone released by the pituitary gland and stimulates the thyroid gland to secrete T4 and T3. When these hormone levels are rise more than it should, TSH level drops. And vice versa, when the level is too low the level of TSH rises.

A hormone released from the hypothalamus (TRH – thyrotrophic releasing hormone) oversees the release of TSH from the pituitary gland. Two main conditions arise from abnormal gland functions, the first is include hyperactivity – a condition known as hyperthyroidism (Thyrotoxicosis) or Under activity (hypothyroidism) a condition in which the gland does not produce sufficient amount of hormones.

How is Hypothyroidism diagnosed?

As a result of the TSH functions the gland secretes thyroxin, also known as T4. Thus, checking T4 levels provides an overview of the overall functioning of the gland.

TSH Test:

What Does TSH Test For, and what are the normal TSH levelsNormal levels of TSH are between 0.4 to 5.0 million-units per liter. Levels that are too high may indicate under-activity of the gland, which causes the pituitary to increase the secretion of TSH in an attempt to spur the thyroid to return to normal operation.

Normal levels of T4 hormone are 5 to 11 micrograms per deciliter. Low levels indicate under-active thyroid, which encourage the adrenal gland to try and “compensate” for the loss, and release more TSH.

Neck ultrasound examination:

Enables to locate lumps, cysts or tumors in the thyroid gland, which generally do not damage the correct operation of the thyroid, but there is a major importance for those findings. The test is quick and painless.

Thyroid mapping:

A Thyroid Test for observing changes in thyroid function intended primarily for patients with hyperthyroidism. Subject ingests a radioactive iodine pill four hours before the test, or gets an intravenous injection of a radioactive substance called Technetium (both, by the way, carry no potential danger). This material is absorbed in the thyroid gland, and during the scan a picture indicating the spread of iodine in the gland and its reactivity. The test is not performed in pregnant women.

ECG (or EKG):

A test preformed in adults, may indicate ECG electrical conduction disorder and a slower pulse rate.

Cholesterol:

Slowdown in metabolism and energy processes may cause an increase in cholesterol (over 200 milligrams per deciliter) and triglycerides (over 150 milligrams per deciliter).

Final Thoughts

After all said and done, when the TSH test levels indicate that you may have an underactive thyroid gland you will want to treat the conditions as soon as possibly can.

Hypothyroidism Conventional Treatment is done by a daily and gradual Thyroxin intake. You can usually notice an improvement within a few weeks.

What is the alternative?

Alternative medicine is reaping much greater success in treating Hypothyroidism, especially in its initial stages. We recommend that you look at the variety of natural treatment featured on our site, though the most effective Hypothyroidism natural treatment is Hypothyroidism Revolution.
